Bats Power Baseball to Sweep at Lakeland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin – The MSOE baseball team pounded out 25 hits in game two, including a five-hit, four-RBI effort by junior Owen Burnikel, to hammer Lakeland 20-4 and complete a Sunday afternoon sweep of a NACC doubleheader at Muskie Baseball Field.

The Raiders 10-10, 3-3 NACC) won game one 9-3, then saw eight starters collect multiple hits against the Muskies (8-12, 2-4 NACC) in game two forcing the game to be cut short due to the run rule.

Burnikel went 5-for-6 in the second game with a double, home run, four runs scored, and four more batted it. Junior Garrett Willems also homered among his three hits and drove in four runs. Junior Ryan Newman had a four-hit game with three runs scored and another three driven in.

MSOE actually trailed after one inning, 2-1. Burnikel opened the scoring in the top half of the inning with a RBI double. Lakeland then capitalized on a pair of errors to score twice in the bottom of the frame.

That score held until the Raiders struck for four runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. LU would pull a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the fourth inning but the Red & White answered back with a run in the fifth before the floodgates opened in a six-run sixth inning.

MSOE then tacked on three more runs in the seventh for the team's first 20-run game since a 25-12 victory over Maranatha April 17, 2010.

Junior Michael Boehmer (3-1) three 4.0 innings of shutout relief to earn the win. He struck out four and allowed just three base hits. Sophomore Matt Mohapp went 3.0 innings in the start and was charged with three earned runs.

While all nine starters in game two collected at least one hit, the Raiders had another balanced offensive effort in the opener with eight starters collecting a hit. Burnikel, Willems, senior Brandon McCumber, and junior Jimmy Carrington each had two hits with Burnikel driving in two more runs.

Freshman D.J. Ellifson got the Raiders on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Lakeland would tie the game with a run of its own in the third before MSOE took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth. Sophomore Nick Gross drove in a run with a single and Burnikel followed with a two-run double to make it 4-1.

The Red & White later broke open a 4-2 game gave with a five-run seventh inning to seal the victory. All nine batters came to the plate in the inning with Carrington, Willems, and sophomore Andres Oselio driving in runs. The Raiders also capitalized on a pair of Muskie errors in the frame.

Senior Jacob Roley (2-2) put together a solid effort on the mound earning the win with 5.1 innings of work. He worked around seven hits to allow just two runs. Sophomore Sam Crawford came on for 2.2 innings of relief and freshman Justin Celeski struck out one in getting the final three outs of the game.

MSOE is back in action Tuesday, hosting Maranatha for a doubleheader at The Rock Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
