WAUKESHA, Wisconsin – The MSOE women's tennis team claimed wins in each of the top five singles positions, including a pair by freshmen, to defeat Carroll on the road Friday afternoon in its season-opener.
The Raiders (1-0) trailed 2-1 after doubles play before pulling past the Pioneers with a dominating performance in singles. The match was also the debut of first-year head coach Ruth McGuire.
MSOE scored a pair of dramatic three-set wins in the top two singles positions. At No. 2, sophomore Sammy Soeder rebounded from a 7-5 loss in the opening frame to claim her match with 6-2, 12-10 wins over the final two sets. Senior Carly Grant opened with a 6-0 win at No. 1, then fended off her opponent after a second-set 6-3 loss. In the tie-breaker, Grant won 10-8.
Freshmen Cierra Smith and Katie Clements posted straight-set wins in their collegiate debuts. Smith played at No. 3 and won 7-5, 6-3. Clements claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Senior Riya Chaudhari rounded out the individual winners in the No. 5 slot, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles, the pairing of juniors Cali Bonie and Kim Baffin netted the Raiders a key point at No. 3, 8-4.
MSOE does not compete again until Sept. 9 when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran in its NACC opener.
