FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – Senior Carly Grant and sophomore Sammy Soeder teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles and won in the top two singles positions, but it was not enough as the MSOE women's tennis team was edged by Marian, 5-4, Wednesday afternoon at Buttermilk Creek Park.
The Raiders (6-3, 3-1 NACC) also scored a victory over the Sabres () with freshman Katie Clements at No. 4 singles.
Grant and Soeder opened the match with an 8-4 win in the top doubles slot but MSOE still trailed 2-1 coming out of a tight doubles competition. Marian won at No. 2 with an 8-5 score and 8-4 at No. 3.
Both players carried their momentum over into tense singles matches. Grant played at No. 1 and held off her opponent in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, at No. 2, Soeder grinded out a 7-6 (10-8) opening-set win before coasting to victory 6-0 in the second.
Clements scored a straight-sets victory, downing her foe 6-2, 6-2.
The Raiders continue to improve throughout their matches, narrowing the gap from an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Marian last season.
MSOE returns to the court with a pair of matches Saturday, hosting Concordia Chicago and Alverno at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, at McKinley Park Tennis Courts.
