Men's Basketball Falls Short in OT at WLC

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Matthew Kirmse scored 24 points and senior Tegan Miles forced overtime with 20 seconds remaining in overtime but the MSOE men's basketball team could not keep up with Wisconsin Lutheran in overtime, falling 75-69, Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex.

The Raiders (12-7, 11-4 NACC) and Warriors (5-14, 5-10 NACC) were tied at 66-66 in the extra period when five-straight points by the home team proved too much to overcome.

Kirmse hit on five 3-pointers in the game to lead the way. Junior Jason Palesse scored 11 points and sophomore Jake Gebert added 10 off the bench.

Chase Nowak led WLC with 21 points and Collin Kennedy posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

MSOE had led by as many as seven points in the second half but once the Warriors caught up, it was back-and-forth. Six-straight points gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 57-55 lead when the teams traded scoring possessions to make it 59-57 WLC with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation.

Freshman Sammy Linn found Miles for a game-tying layup with 20 seconds remaining to make it 59-59. A go-ahead attempt was off the mark at the buzzer.

The teams combined for 26 points in the extra period, trading buckets for the first three minutes. After Linn tied the score at 66-66 with just under two minutes remaining, Nowak scored five-straight points for the Warriors to make it 71-66 inside the final minute.

Kirmse answered with a three-pointer seconds later, but that'd be as close as the Raiders would get. WLC converted four-straight field goals down the stretch to ice the game.

MSOE shot 41 percent for the game, including 6-of-22 from three-point range, and finished 13-for-16 at the free throw line. Wisconsin Lutheran finished at 43.5 percent shooting, making 7-of-19 three-point attempts, and posting a 14-of-19 clip at the free throw line.

The Raiders will look to shake off the loss when they return to the court Wednesday against Edgewood.
