Ruark's Golden Goal is the Difference at CUC

Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Illinois – Freshman Jill Ruark scored just 1:17 into overtime to send the MSOE women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Concordia Chicago Wednesday afternoon at Concordia Stadium.

The Raiders (8-7, 5-2 NACC) won for the fourth-straight time while moving ahead of the Cougars (4-10, 4-3 NACC) in the league standings.

The teams played to a scoreless deadlock through regulation before sophomore Megan Core kick-started the game's lone goal early in the extra period. She received a shallow clearance and sent a diagonal ball to the top of the penalty area. Ruark received the pass with space between two defenders and, with her turn, was clear on goal. She beat the keeper with a low shot from 13 yards out.

Ruark's goal was the breakthrough MSOE needed after being outshot 7-4 in the opening half. The Red & White regrouped at halftime and appeared to have pulled level in the match. The teams took 11 shots each in the match, with CUC gaining a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Juniors Abbie Lorenz and Allison Lessila combined on the shutout. Lorenz stopped five shots in the first half and Lessila preserved the clean sheet with three more saves after halftime.

The Raiders will look to continue their winning form Saturday at Benedictine.
