GLENDALE, Wisconsin – The MSOE women's tennis team clinched a school-record third-straight bid into the NACC Tournament with a pair of 9-0 shutouts over Dominican and Concordia Chicago Saturday at Nicolet High School.
The Raiders (7-9, 6-4 NACC) will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament and play at No. 4 Marian on Tuesday April 30.
Junior Sammy Soeder and sophomore Katie Clements did not drop any games in singles play. Soeder won both matches 6-0, 6-0, while Clements was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against DU and won the first set against CUC 6-0 before her opponent retired.
Sophomore Cierra Smith was near flawless at No. 4, dropping just a game against Dominican, 6-0, 6-1, before a 6-0, 6-0 win against her Cougar opponent.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Hannah Marron swept past her Dominican opponent, 6-0, 6-0, before prevailing in the second match in the most competitive matchup of the day, 6-1, 6-3.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions saw some flip-flopping on the day with sophomore Leah Becker playing at No. 5 against the Stars and scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win. Junior Olivia Boden did not have an opponent in the opener due to a default, so she jumped to the fifth position vs. CUC and replicated her teammate's performance, 6-1, 6-0. Becker played at No. 6 in the second match, dropping just one game, again, in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
MSOE did not drop a point in doubles play against the Stars. Soeder and Marron won 8-0 at No. 1 while Clements and Smith posted a shutout of their own at No. 2. The No. 3 point went to the Red & White by default. Versus Concordia Chicago, the same lineups posted 8-1 wins in the top two positions.
Senior Cali Bonie and junior Kim Baffin took the court in the No. 3 doubles match and won 8-2.
The Raiders will return to the court in the spring in preparation for the NACC Tournament, starting off the campaign March. 9 with a doubleheader against St. Norbert and St. Thomas.
