MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with an 8-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in the first league match of the season Friday afternoon at Elite Club-River Glen.
The Raiders (1-5, 1-0 NACC) dropped just a point at No. 1 doubles but downed the Warriors (0-11, 0-1 NACC) in every other match for a convincing win.
MSOE was playing its first match in 41 days and received a boost by the return of sophomore Luke Nelson after the completion of the basketball season. The 2017 NACC Freshman of the Year, as well as all-conference performer in both singles and doubles, he slotted right in at No. 2 singles and doubles and the lineup responded well.
Nelson teams with sophomore Curt Norton in doubles and the pair was victorious 8-0, each adding singles wins in the match. Nelson's No. 2 match went smoothly 6-2, 6-0, and Norton emerged victorious in an entertaining 6-4, 6-3 showing at No. 3.
Senior Ryan Runke headed the singles lineup at No. 1, downing his opponent in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3.
The No. 3 doubles pairing of freshmen Connor Splingaire and Bryan Roob combined on a decisive 8-2 win. In singles play, Splingaire picked up his first collegiate win 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. In the No. 6 position, Roob won for the second time this season in stunning fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
The Raiders have a quick turnaround, returning to the courts Saturday against Aurora at Highlander Elite in Brookfield.
