MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's tennis team dropped just four games in posting a third-straight shutout and seventh consecutive win with a 9-0 victory over Lakeland Wednesday afternoon at Elite Club-River Glen.
The Raiders (7-5, 7-0 NACC) have played over twice as many league matches as the other teams in contention for a top-two NACC Tournament seed but they remain one of two unbeaten teams in the conference. They'll cap the league season April 25 when they host 3-0 Concordia Wisconsin.
It was a dominant performance throughout the lineup for MSOE, as all six players in the lineup swept singles and doubles points.
Freshmen Connor Splingaire and Bryan Roob did not drop a game between them, winning together at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, and posting 6-0, 6-0 in singles play in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of seniors Ryan Runke and Brad Phoenix also swept through their match, 8-0. Coincidentally, the duo also posted identical singles scores, 6-1, 6-0. Runke played at No. 1 and Phoenix at No. 4.
Sophomores Luke Nelson and Curt Norton formed the No. 2 doubles partnership and won 8-2. They then each posted perfect singles wins, 6-0, 6-0. Nelson was the No. 2 player and Norton played at No. 3.
A loss by Concordia Wisconsin guarantees MSOE a share of a second-straight league crown, while an Edgewood defeat will clinch a top-two finish for the Raiders and a bye into the NACC Tournament semifinals. As it stands, with so much of the league season remaining for other teams, the Red & White can finish no worse than a tie for second place and the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
MSOE returns to the court Saturday with a non-league match against Illinois Tech. The Scarlet Hawks will join the NACC next season.
