Baseball Splits at Rockford Behind Game One Gem

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LOVES PARK, Illinois – Senior Michael Boehmer struck out seven and allowed just four hits over 8.0 innings to lead the MSOE baseball team to 4-1 victory over Rockford in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Rivets Stadium.

The Raiders (11-10, 3-1 NACC) then fell to the Regents (8-9, 3-2 NACC) in game two for their first setback of the league schedule.

Boehmer (4-0) did not allow a hit over the first of 6.1 innings, throwing four 1-2-3 innings and allowing just a pair of base runners on errors. After conceding his first hit in the seventh, as well as a run, he came back in the eighth to face the minimum and cap his day.

Freshman Caleb Willert then pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout for his first collegiate save.

At the plate, MSOE got a run on the board before collecting its first hit via a hit batter, walk, and a wild pitch. Freshman Julian Sonn then opened the scoring on an RBI groundout.

Junior Nick Gross led off the fourth inning with a home run and the Red & White used small ball to tack on an additional run. After another hit batter, senior Max Kemp had a bunt single. Both runners moved up with a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout, this time from senior Ryan Newman.

Senior Garrett Willems then added an additional insurance run when he led off the fifth with a home run of his own.

Gross finished with two hits and a walk to pace the offense.

In the second game, the Regents struck first with a run in the first inning before the Raiders took a 2-1 lead on a two-run double by Newman in the second inning.

Rockford then pulled ahead for good at 4-2 with a three-run third inning. Senior Owen Burnikel drove in a run with a double in the sixth inning but the home team quickly countered with an unearned run to re-establish the two-run cushion.

Junior Sam Crawford (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound. He threw 3.0 innings with three strikeouts. He allowed four hits and three earned runs in the start. Freshman Mason LeBreck pitched the final 5.0 innings, scattering three hits with a pair of strikeouts, and allowed just an unearned run.

The Raiders are back in action Tuesday with a makeup of last Saturday's postponed doubleheader against Aurora. First pitch in game one is at noon.
