Men's Tennis Edged by Eagles in NACC Semifinals

MADISON, Wisconsin – The MSOE men's tennis team battled down to the wire with Edgewood in a thrilling NACC Championship semifinal match but came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision Sunday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Center.

The Raiders (7-8) went down to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles against the Eagles (9-12), falling short 7-3 in the tiebreaker to fall in the match.

Freshmen Connor Splingaire and Bryan Roob combined for three team points as the duo claimed a doubles win at No. 3 and each won their singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The match was back and forth throughout the lineup, as Edgewood claimed the first point in doubles and the pairing of Splingaire/Roob leveling the score with an 8-3 win. EC would capture a second doubles point, prevailing at No. 2 in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).

Splingaire tied the match at 2-2 with his 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Roob then answered another Eagles point in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, once again tying the match.

After another match ended against the Raiders, sophomore Luke Nelson wrapped up a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles for a 4-4 tie in the match.

The end result came down to the No. 4 singles match where senior Brad Phoenix rallied from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to take the second, 7-5. His third set went to a tiebreaker where he fell just short, 7-4, to concede the set 7-6.
