MILWAUKEE - The MSOE women's tennis team picked up its first two wins of the season Saturday, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 6-3 and Alverno 8-1 at Nicolet High School.
Freshman Hannah Marron was perfect on the day with a pair of singles wins and both doubles points to lead the Raiders (2-5, 2-2 NACC) to a pair of victories.
In the opener against the Warriors, MSOE opened with a pair of doubles points, dropping only a 9-7 thriller at No. 2. Marron teamed with junior Sammy Soeder for an 8-5 win at No. 1 while senior Cali Bonie and junior Baffin posted the same score in their No. 3 victory.
The Raiders then rolled in the top of the lineup, winning each of the first four singles places. Soeder was a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 and Marron picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2. Sophomores Katie Clements and Cierra Smith then posted identical 6-1, 6-3 wins in their No. 3 and No. 4 matches, respectively.
Against an undermanned five-member Inferno squad, MSOE dropped just the No. 1 singles to complete the sweep. Soeder and Marron rolled at No. 1 doubles 8-2 and the pairing of Smith/Clements won 8-1 in the No. 2 position.
Marron had some work to do at No. 2 singles, as she had to hold off her opponent in a 6-2, 6-7, 10-7 victory. Clements then added another win at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.
Head coach Ruth McGuire was able to shuffle the bottom half of her lineup a bit, inserting Baffin into the No. 4 singles position and slotting sophomore Olivia Boden up one spot to No. 5 for the first time this season. Neither was phased, as Baffin posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout and Boden won 6-0, 6-1.
The Red & White rounded out the afternoon with wins by default in at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles against Alverno.
The Raiders have had their next match at Marian postponed, so they will return to action Friday against Ripon at McKinley Park.
