AURORA, Illinois – The MSOE women's tennis team defeated Aurora 8-1 at Washington Middle School to kick off a doubleheader in Illinois Saturday.
The Raiders (4-6, 3-2 NACC) then suffered a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Illinois Tech in the afternoon.
Against the Spartans, MSOE took a pair of points from the doubles competition before running the table in singles.
Sophomores Katie Clements and Cierra Smith were each double winners on the day, scoring an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles before adding straight-sets victories in singles. Clements played at No. 3 and won 6-3, 6-0 while Smith was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4.
Junior Sammy Soeder also did not drop a set in winning her No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Hannah Marron won a thrilling three-set match at No. 2, rebounding from a second-set loss to cruise in the match tiebreaker, 10-1. The final score was 6-4, 5-7, 10-1.
At the bottom of the lineup, sophomore Leah Becker and Olivia Boden each won handily. Becker was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at No. 5 singles and Boden won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
Rounding out the winners of the day was the No. 3 doubles pairing of senior Cali Bonie and junior Kim Baffin. The duo secured an 8-2 victory to ensure the Red & White's lead heading into singles.
The Raiders return to the court Tuesday at Lakeland as part of a four-match week. They play Marian Friday before a home non-league triangular with North Park and UW-Stevens Point Saturday.
