MSOE women's tennis ended the 2020-21 regular season on a high note when they blanked the Muskies of Lakeland on Saturday afternoon and set themselves up for a third faceoff against Wisconsin Lutheran this season in the first round of the NACC tournament. With each team owning a 5-4 victory over the other, it was just about as even as a playoff contest could get. Unfortunately, the Warriors got the last laugh as they ended the Raiders season on Tuesday morning.
MATCH SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 9
Lakeland – 0
NACC Tournament Quarterfinals
No. 5 seed MSOE RAIDERS – 0
No. 4 seed Wisconsin Lutheran – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lakeland (2-6, 2-6 NACC) was no match for MSOE (5-8, 4-4 NACC) in each team's regular season finale. The Raiders won nine different sets by the scores of either 8-0 or 6-0 as the Red & White kept the Muskies off the scoreboard all day long. Katie Clements and Cierra Smith won their doubles match in the number two spot via an 8-0 score and then proceeded to take victories in the third and fourth singles slots by posting dual 6-0, 6-0 results. Lakeland never came close to threatening, winning just 10 games throughout the duration of the contest as the Raiders finished the NACC conference season with a victory.
Wisconsin Lutheran (10-11, 5-3 NACC) was waiting for the Red & White in the quarterfinal round of the NACC tournament on Tuesday and unfortunately, the Warriors were ready for them. The Raiders fought all morning long but were not able to come away with a victory. MSOE came close to winning each doubles match but lost all three via 8-5, 8-4, and 8-6 scores. Needing to pretty much run the table in singles action, the Raiders were unable to win a set as loses in the first and fifth spots ended their season via a 5-0 defeat.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Red & White's season has come to a close. They finished the 2020-21 campaign with a 5-8 overall record and earned a 4-4 mark in conference play.
