Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. – MSOE baseball went into day two of the NCAA tournament looking to keep their championship hopes alive when they took on No. 3 Augustana in the first elimination game of the Whitewater Regional. The Raiders and Vikings played a highly competitive contest but it was the Auggies that had more late game magic than the Red & White in a two run loss.
RESULT IN 10 INNINGS
No. 3 Augustana – 5
No. 4 MSOE RAIDERS – 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 4 MSOE (27-18, 18-6 NACC) was gifted two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of No. 3 Augustana (34-11, 11-7 CCIW) miscues and the Raiders were able to hang on to that lead for some time.
- The Viking shaved the Red & White's lead in half in the top of the third before tying the contest at 2-2 in the fifth. Each team had chances to take the advantage in the ballgame between the sixth and eighth frames but both sides came up empty handed.
- Augustana manufactured a run in the top of the ninth with a single, bunt, and sacrifice fly, putting the Raiders at a one run disadvantage heading into their last at-bats. However, the Red & White were not phased. Josh Beier singled to left to drive in John Kalitowski to tie the game once more and the two squads entered extras tied at 3-3.
- Unfortunately, there would be no more late game heroics for MSOE. A two-run round tripper to right field broke the tie in Augustana's favor in the top of the tenth, ending the Raiders historic season with a 5-3 defeat.
