MILWAUKEE – MSOE softball began their 2023 home slate in style as they opened up play at brand new MSOE Raiders Field with a doubleheader against Concordia Chicago. The Raiders started a new era off on the right foot with timely offense and great pitching in a sweep of the Cougars on Sunday afternoon.
RESULTS
Concordia Chicago – 1
MSOE RAIDERS – 8
Concordia Chicago – 4
MSOE Raiders – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- MSOE (9-5, 2-0 NACC) dominated game one behind some timely offense and lights out pitching. The Raiders got their first run of the game when Jenna Trewyn homered to left field for her first home run of the season. The Red & White followed up with two more runs in the second with some small ball tactics.
- The Raiders pushed across two runs in the fifth and the three runs they scored in the sixth were highlighted by Jocelyn Clodi's first career home run.
- Kennedy Lehn towed the rubber in the first game and never allowed Concordia Chicago (5-10, 1-2 NACC) to get anywhere close to the lead in the ballgame. She gave up just two hits and struck out seven on her way to evening up her season record at 4-4 with an 8-1 MSOE victory.
- Game Two
- The Red & White also got on the board first in game two when a Morgan Long fielders' choice plated Grace Salaja. They followed that up with another in the third thanks to a Caroline Fouras double that scored Reagan Jordan.
- There was some fight in CUC during this one, however. The Cougars plated a run in both the fifth and sixth inning before the Raiders pushed across three of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Three straight doubles from Faith Matta, Trewyn, and Lauren Stefanczyk gave MSOE some much needed insurance runs.
- Concordia Chicago tried to play spoilers with two solo shots in the seventh that pulled them within one but Lehn shut the door in relief to secure the win for starter Sarah Grossman and locked down her second save in the process with a 5-4 Raiders win.
RAIDER REMARKS
- The Raiders are 11-14 all time against CUC but have won the last eight meetings. Their last loss to the Cougars came back in 2018.
- Jenna Trewyn's home run in the first inning of game one was also the first hit ever recorded at MSOE Raiders Field.
