Raiders Sweep Scarlet Hawks for First Home Sweep

GLENDALE, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team grabs their first home sweep of the season against Illinois Tech, holding on in game one while walking it off in extras in game two.

RESULTS
MSOE RAIDERS – 6
Illinois Tech – 4

MSOE RAIDERS – 8
Illinois Tech - 7

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • MSOE (15-10, 7-7 NACC) got on the board first as Blake Hall doubled to bring Chris Barnes in for the first run of the game. The next inning, the two each hit doubles to bring two more runs in to make the game 3-0. Sam Meidenbauer kept the scoring going in the fifth hitting a little-league style home run to bring both him and Kyle Labedz all the way around the bases opening to a 5-0 lead.
    • Tyler Gronert got the start and held a perfect game going into the sixth inning. After the first hit was allowed, Illinois Tech (14-15, 7-7 NACC) found rhythm to cut to their deficit making the game 5-2. Collin Truitt added an insurance run in bottom of the eighth as Luke Schwafnagel came in to close out the ninth after the Scarlet Hawks added two more runs making the final score 6-4.
  • Game Two
    • The Scarlet Hawks knew they needed to jump out to an early and found themselves up 4-0 after the top of the first inning. The Raider offense answered in the bottom half of the inning with a Jack Kalitowski RBI groundout, but that's all they could put on the scoreboard down 4-1 after one inning of play.
    • The two sides traded runs with the Truitt singling to right field for the Raider's run, but the Red & White found their spark in the seventh inning. Truitt stepped to the plate with two men on with another single to right to bring one in, followed by Labedz with a single of his own to be down one. Schwafnagel stepped into to box for his first at bat of the day and blasted a double into left center field to bring two runs in to take a 6-5 lead for the first lead of the game.
    • The Scarlet Hawks responded late with a homerun to tie and a single to take the lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Hall stepped in to lead the comeback charge and wasted no time sending the ball over the right field fence to tie the game to force extras. After just two and a half innings of scoreless play, Truitt stepped in and on the first pitch of the bottom of the 12th blasted the ball into right field to walk it off to complete the sweep.
