Women's Volleyball Comeback Stopped Short at Aurora

AURORA, Ill. – After going down two sets early, the MSOE women's volleyball stormed back with hopes of forcing a fifth set over Aurora University but come up short.

RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 1

Aurora - 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After battling back and forth to begin, MSOE (11-13, 3-5 NACC) took their claim of the lead after an ace from Madalyn Skwarek and a kill from Hannah Gilbert to lead 11-7. The Raiders extended their margin 16-9 after back-to-back blocks Ana Knutson contributed on but Aurora (13-10, 7-1 NACC) closed quickly on a run to go down 16-15. The Spartans took the lead 20-19 and didn't give it back after that, taking the set 25-21. The Spartans carried that momentum into the second set, blowing the doors off the Raiders on a 12-0 run midway through to lead 18-5. In a hole, the Spartans finished the set with ease, winning 25-12.
  • The Raiders turned things around quickly, starting the third set on a 5-1 run with kills from Emma Schattschneider and Samantha Johnson. The lead grew to five after a kill from Schattschneider made the score 9-4, but the Spartans took the lead after a 6-0 run to go ahead 14-12. A block from Schattschneider and Knutson tied things at 15 before Ashley Murphy helped the Raiders take things to set point 24-22. Points from the Spartans helped them tie it up but errors from them helped clinch the set win for the Raiders 26-24.
  • A hot start from the Red & White was evident again in the fourth set, storming away to lead 8-2, being capped by an ace from Brooke Fledderman but the lead was quickly erased as the Spartans tied it at nine. After a run from the Spartans to go up 16-13, the Raiders tied things at 17 behind back-to-back kills from Schattschneider, then 20-19 after an ace from her. Schattschneider tied it once again at 24 with hopes of forcing a fifth set, but the Spartans took easy points to seal things, winning 26-24.
