Women's Volleyball Puts Together a Stunning Comeback to Clinch NACC Berth

MILWAUKEE – In essentially a win or go home game for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) tournament, the MSOE women's volleyball team put together an all-time thriller Thursday evening in a reverse sweep over Rockford University to clinch.

RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 3

Rockford - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The night got start with three straight kills from MSOE (13-18, 5-8 NACC) before Rockford (10-14, 1-12 NACC) tied things early at seven. A kill from Ava Larson sparked a 4-0 run to take a 15-12 advantage midway through but back-to-back aces gave the Regents a 18-17 lead that they never let up after that to win set one 25-21. The Regents stormed away to start the second set on a 5-0 run, eventually growing to 9-2. The Raiders clawed back after kills from Makynna Crook and Annabella Visak tied things at 12 but things stayed the same as the Regents took the second set 25-22.
  • After the Raiders finally felt like they had some momentum to start when a kill from Ashley Murphy followed by an ace from Oliva Bartels put them ahead 5-3, the Regents put a run together of their own to take a 7-5 lead. Miscues from the Regents helped springboard the Raiders into the lead 16-12 as Ana Knutson capped the set off with a kill from Brooke Fledderman to win 25-22.
  • Things were bouncing back and forth in the fourth set as the Regents held a 13-11 lead midway through. After a kill from Knutson, Murphy stepped back to serve and it was all Red & White from there on. Murphy racked out five service aces enroute to a 13-0 run that was finished off by Emma Schattschneider to force the fifth and crucial set 25-13. After rallies were going back and forth between the two sides, the Raiders began burying kills, including two from Hannah Gilbert, to take it to match point 14-7. With the Regents putting together two more points to stop the run, Murphy put the final nail in the coffin and the comeback.
