ST. PETER, Minn. – The MSOE men's tennis team made their way up north to Gustavus Adolphus College for the ITA Regional Championships last weekend, as the Raiders faced-off against competitors from all over the country across four days of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The pairing of Yacine Ferjani and Andres Saavedra emerged victorious in the first two round of the ITA Doubles Championship, besting Veldic/Mee of St. Olaf College 8-2 in their opening matchup, before toppling McCaffery/Trinka of Carroll University 8-7 in the follow up. MSOE's top pair would fall to the duo of Vitali/Van Fossen from UW-Whitewater on Saturday afternoon, by a score of 8-4.
- On the singles side, Saavedra and Carlos Patino would represent the Red and White, as both won their opening round contests of the ITA Singles Championship. Patino won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, against Sam Wolden of Saint John's University, while Saavedra cruised against AJ Wilkins of Central College to advance with a final score of 6-4, 6-2. Both Raiders would fall in their second-round matches as MSOE turned their attention to the Open "B" Draw.
- In the Open "B" Draw, junior Clark Rue had an outstanding weekend, as the Omaha, Neb. native fought all the way to the semi-finals in singles, winning matches against competition from UW-La Crosse, St. Scholastica and Gustavus Adolphus before bowing out against Rhys Biro-Moore of Luther College. Rue would also go on a run to the semi-finals in doubles, as he and teammate Miguel Lopez would score victories against UW-Superior, St. Olaf and Luther before overcoming Wartburg in the quarterfinals. Ultimately MSOE would fall to the host Gusties in the semi-final, finishing just two wins short of glory.
