Women's Volleyball Splits Day One of Sugar Loaf, Picks Up First Victory

WINONA, Minn. – The Raiders made their way to Land of 10,000 Lakes along the Mississippi River for the Sugar Loaf Classic, hosted by Saint Mary's University. After falling a sweep to Buena Vista University, the Raiders took down the host Cardinals in four sets for their first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. Buena Vista
    • Buena Vista (2-5, 0-0 American Rivers) came out of the gate leading 5-1 but was reeled in by MSOE (1-4, 0-0 NACC) after a pair of kills from Annabella Visak brought the game tied at six. The Beavers eventually carried their lead up to four, leading 13-9, but the Raiders continued to battle with kills from Visak and Emma Schattschneider to tie the set at 15. The Raiders late in the first set took the lead 24-23 hoping to seal it until the Beavers took over to take it 26-24.
    • The Raiders held the short advantage in the second set after back-to-back kills from Schattschneider and Samantha Johnson led things off. The Beavers slowed got things rolling for them midway through surging to a 19-12 lead and cruised from there to win set two 25-20. The Beavers continued to roll into the third set with that momentum, beginning on a 12-5 run until the Raiders slowly worked their way to within two are a run kicked off by kills from Madalynn Skwarek and Ana Knutson made the score 15-13. The Beavers eventually just fully dominated, ending the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-15.
    • Schattschneider led the Raiders in kills with 10 and 15 digs, while Visak, Johnson, and Gillian McDaniel each had six kills. Morgan Borchardt recorded majority of the assists with 18, along with Olivia Bartels who recorded 13.
  • vs. Saint Mary's (Minn.)
    • Things were even early until a kill from Gillian McDaniel sparked a 9-2 run for the Raiders, including service aces from Visak and Olivia Bartels and two kill from Knutson. Saint Mary's (2-3, 0-0 MIAC) slowly closed their deficit, but the Raiders began to dominate to take the first set 25-15.
    • Raiders took a huge lead from Cardinals miscues for a 9-3 lead. The Cardinals slowly worked to within four midway through but miscues from them halted them from taking down the Raiders in the second set to win 25-18. The Raiders had hopes of sweeping the Cardinals to cap off their first win of the season, but unfortunately, they dropped the set 25-17 to force a fourth set.
    • Samantha Johnson helped spark a 5-2 lead to but the Cardinals continued to make things difficult to end things eventually tied things at 20 late. After a service error from the Cardinals, the Raiders finished things off a 5-0 run with kills from Abby Balkema and Ava Larson to win 25-20.
    • Knutson led the Raiders with 12 kills, along with Schattschneider with 11. Morchardt led once again in assists with 17, infront of Joelle Harrington with 15. Schattschneider also had 18 digs, with Alexis Hicks with 14 and Borchardt with 10.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders return to action tomorrow morning, September 7th, taking on Luther College at 9:00 AM, followed by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 11:00 AM.
