Women's Basketball Extinguishes the Firebirds

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE basketball team rolled on with their early homestand on Wednesday as they welcomed Carthage College to the Kern Center.  The Firebirds proved to be no match for the Raiders, as MSOE secured back-to-back home victories.

FINAL SCORE

Carthage College Firebirds – 49
MSOE RAIDERS - 57

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSOE (2-1, 0-0 NACC) fell behind Carthage (1-1) early in the contest, as the Firebirds worked their way to an early 11-4 lead by the 4:42 mark of the first quarter.  Back-to-back jumpers from Lana Kerley, plus another from Elly Kohl would tie things up, but a Firebird three-pointer gave Carthage a 14-11 lead at the end of the first frame.  After trading ties with the Firebirds, the Raiders would take their first lead of the game on a jumper from Kerley at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter, with the MSOE lead reaching as much as six points in the first half following a three from Halena Hill.  MSOE would hold a 30-25 lead over the Firebirds after a buzzer-beater from Mahima Chokshi closed the first half.
  • Coming out of the break, the Raiders would maintain their lead, building it up to as much as eight points just after the midway point of the third quarter.  Carthage would go on a short run to close the third, bringing the MSOE lead to just three points as the Raiders led 44-41 heading to the final frame.  Carthage would take the lead immediately to start the fourth, until free throws from Dani Mendez and a massive three-point play from freshman Emily Troia gave MSOE a two possession lead with four and a half minutes to play.  The Raiders would handle business from there, nailing all their free throws down the stretch as they toppled their regional foe 57-49.
