Women's Hockey Takes Aurora to Overtime

AURORA, Ill. – With both teams needing a win in the final weeks before the NCHA tournament, the MSOE women's hockey team squared off with the Spartans of Aurora University as the Red and White fell in overtime.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 1

Aurora University - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSOE (4-16-2, 3-10-2 NCHA) withstood an early onslaught from the Spartans (6-13-3, 5-6-2 NCHA) before getting shots from MaryFrancis Williams and Amy MacDonald blocked on the other end of the ice.  The Raiders would trade opportunities on the powerplay with Aurora across the first period, with neither team gaining any offensive edge until Aurora seized the lead just past the midway point of the period.  MSOE would get several good looks on the attack from Amelia Jutz and Lilo Emerson, but the Red and White powerplay could not connect in four chances across the first 20 minutes of play as the Raiders trailed 1-0.
  • Coming out of the first intermission, the Raiders quickly killed off a penalty before working their way towards the equalizing goal as Hannah Baumann and Anika Einbeck got the MSOE offense a glimpse of momentum.  Gray Mandia mustered two quick shots for the Raiders, but the Spartans shut down everything in the second period, until the Raiders went back on the powerplay.  After grinding through the powerplay drought in the first, Baumann found the back of the net thanks to a pass from Emerson to put MSOE on the scoreboard and tie the game up at 1-1 with the Raiders going from 0 to 100 on their powerplay efficiency from period to period.
  • In a tightly contested third period, neither team was able to put points on the scoreboard as the Spartans outshot the Raiders 20-5 but goalie Jenna Kent finished with 30 saves as she kept the Raiders in the thick of things all night.  After 60 minutes of play, the teams would head to overtime still knotted up at 1-1 with the Spartans stealing the victory after the golden goal.
