CALREMONT, Calif. – The MSOE women's soccer team concluded their trip to California with a matchup against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Sunday afternoon. Despite a goal less than 90 seconds into the match, the Raiders were unable to hang on after a scoring frenzy from CMSC in the second half.
RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 2
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas – 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders (0-3-1, 0-0-0 NACC) wasted little time getting ahead of the Athenas (3-0-1, 0-0-0 SCIAC) as Elizabeth Kuhn put a shot oo the goal post and Rosario Etcheverria Abuin followed up the rebound and buried in the back of the net to give MSOE an early lead just 72 seconds into the game. Those shots would mark the only two for the Red and White in the first half, as CMSC controlled the ball and put up eleven of their own, with Page Sanchez recording six saves in a shutout first half.
- Coming out of the halftime break, the Athenas scored an equalizer in the 48th minute, before notching a go-ahead goal ten minutes later on a penalty kick after a Raider handball inside the box. CMSC would add a third goal with ten minutes left to play, as the Raiders desperately tried to spark a rally. Abuin and Kuhn would reverse roles for the second Raider goal of the day on a counter up the left side, but a goal from the Athenas in the final minute squashed any hope of completing the comeback. The Raiders turn their attention to their first home game of the season, as they are ten days away from the start of conference play.
