Women's Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to Marian

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's hockey team took their first loss of the New Year in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday night, as the Raiders fell to the Marian Sabres in overtime after a thrilling back-and-forth contest.

FINAL SCORE
Marian Sabres – 5

MSOE RAIDERS – 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSOE (6-8-1, 3-4-1 NCHA) fell behind Marian (6-7-0, 3-5-0 NCHA) after the Sabres capitalized on the powerplay at the 13:04 mark of the first period after a hooking penalty was assessed against the Raiders.  MSOE would strike back not even a minute later, as Darby Boughan scored unassisted to knot things up for the Red and White.  The Raiders would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after Arial Lapsa found Amy MacDonald on the powerplay, as the team captain found the back of net with just under three minutes remaining in the first.
  • The Sabres would tie things up at 2-2 just before the midway point of the second period, with Emily Reiner recording the go-ahead goal for the Raiders once again, thanks to assists from Lapsa and Boughan.  With the Raiders on the powerplay fown the stretch of the second period, but the Sabres flipped the script, stealing the puck and recording a shorthanded goal as Marian had tied things up by the second intermission.
  • In the third period, Reiner would strike first, giving MSOE a 4-3 lead with over eleven minutes left to play.  With the Raiders on the penalty kill with under two minutes to play, the Sabres would pull their goalie for the six-on-four advantage, tying things up with 90 seconds to go as the teams geared up for OT.  Reiner nearly had the game won for the Raiders but her shot hit pipe, as the Sabres took it back the other way, scoring the game winning goal with under a minute left in the extra period in backbreaking loss for the Red and White.
