DE PERE, Wis. – The MSOE Women's Hockey team made their Slaats Cup debut on Friday night, taking on St. Norbert College in the first playoff game in program history. The Raiders
would be shut out by the Green Knights in their inaugural postseason effort, as they look to force a mini-game tomorrow afternoon.
FINAL SCORE
No. 6 MSOE RAIDERS – 0
No. 3 St. Norbert Green Knights – 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MSOE (11-13-2, 8-8-2 NCHA) and SNC (16-8-2, 12-4-2 NCHA) exchanged shots across the first period with neither team able to establish a consistent offensive attack until the midway point of the period. The Green Knights recorded the last seven shots of the first frame, with Nadia Buck and Sara Kopf each blocking a shot while Jenna Kent recorded five saves. With both teams scoreless after the first intermission, the Raiders would be assessed a hooking penalty, sending SNC to the powerplay just four minutes into the second period. The Green Knights would convert with the Raiders shorthanded, as St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead with 14:38 left in the second frame.
- With another penalty assessed against the Red and White, this time for holding, the Raiders would need a timely penalty kill to stay in the mix. The special teams unit would come through in a critical spot for the Raiders, but the Green Knights would tally their second goal of the game at even strength with just over five minutes remaining in the second period. The Green Knights would be tagged for an illegal body check not even a minute later, sending the Raiders to the powerplay in the waning minutes of the second period, trailing 2-0.
- The Red and White saw shots from Gray Mandia and Lexi Jackson both blocked by the SNC penalty kill unit, as the Raiders trailed by two goals after the second intermission. Despite the increase in offensive output from the Raiders in the third period, MSOE was unable to get on the scoreboard in De Pere, as the Green Knights took the first game of the series. For the Raiders to extend their season, they must win game two tomorrow, which would force a 20-minute mini-game three to determine a winner.
