Softball Swept by Pioneers in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The MSOE softball team ended their trip to Kentucky with a doubleheader against Transylvania University.  The Raiders would drop game one to the Pioneers in a low-scoring affair, before falling in extra innings in game two.

MSOE RAIDERS - 5
Transylvania University - 6

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • MSOE (3-8) and Transylvania were scoreless through the first inning, with the opposition loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning after three straight hits.  Katie Pollock was unphased by the short rally from the Pioneers, striking out the next three batters in a row to end the Transylvania threat.  The Raiders would tally their first hit on single from Emma Smith, as the Red and White's centerfielder stole second to put the Raiders in scoring position with two outs.   Kaitlyn DeNapoli followed by drawing a walk to put two runners on for MSOE, but Smith was caught stealing third to end the top of the third inning.  A leadoff triple from the Pioneers would help Transylvania work their way to a 2-0 lead after three innings of play.
    • A Jayda Nelson single and Carlee Emery double would put ducks on the pond for the Raiders with two outs in the fourth inning, but Pioneers would escape without allowing a run, pushing their lead to 3-0 after the fifth inning.  In the top of the sixth Caroline Fouras singled, Rikka Ludvigson walked and Nelson singled again to load the bases for the Red and White with just one out.  Lylah DeArmond would single to right field, allowing Fouras and Ludvigson to score, cutting the deficit to just one run at 3-2.
    • The Pioneers would load the bases once more in the bottom of the sixth, but Pollock escaped from the jam without allowing any more damage.  Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, the Red and White were unable to complete their comeback as they fell in the first leg of the doubleheader.
  • Game Two
    • In game two, the Raiders trailed the Pioneers 1-0 through most of the contest after Transylvania tallied a first inning run.  Emery would tie the game up in the top of the sixth inning, as the junior right fielder doubled to left field, allowing Fouras to score and knot the game up at 1-1.
    • After the Pioneers pushed their lead to 3-1 after sixth, Ludvigson would crush a double to the right center gap, bringing Fouras around for the second time while allowing both Brynn Kerber and DeArmond to score, emptying the bases as the Raiders took their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the seventh at 4-3.
    • The Pioneers would tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh, but the Raiders would respond right back as the Red and White took a 5-4 lead in extra innings after an RBI single from DeArmond.  The Pioneers however would tally two singles in their first three at bats, as Transylvania walked off MSOE in quick fashion in the bottom of the eighth.
