Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Austin Stueck scored a career-high 35 points to lead the MSOE men's basketball team to a 96-89 win over Lakeland Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (6-2, 3-2 NACC) hung with the Muskies (7-3, 4-2 NACC) throughout the first half when it seemed like the visitors could not miss. MSOE took the lead into the break and later pulled ahead for good with 13 minutes remaining in the game.
Stueck was 11-for-17 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range, and made all seven free throw tries to breeze past his previous career high of 22 points. He was one of four in double-digits for the Red and White, as senior Jaren Singh tallied 16 points and sophomore Connor Patterson and freshman Collin Seubert scored 13 points apiece.
Six Muskies topped 10 points, led by James Oshkeshequoam with 19. The league's leading scorer Justin Ward was averaging a double-double of 22.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game coming into the game. He finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Lakeland seemingly could not miss in the first half, hitting 59.3 percent from the field and burying 7-of-10 from three-point range. The Raiders hung close with defense, forcing 11 turnovers and converting them into 14 points. They trailed by as many as six, but finished the half strong and when into halftime leading 48-45.
The second half started with the teams trading buckets, before the teams traded big hits with long runs. MSOE led 53-30 at 18:24 before LC rattled off 11-straight points. Stueck then fueled a 14-0 Raiders run, scoring the first five points. Junior Jeremiah Erdmann followed with a three and Patterson put his team ahead for good with back-to-back layups.
Lakeland held close, pulling within one several times, but each time MSOE got some key points and pulled away once again. Senior John Cording hit a pair of free throws with 25.5 seconds remaining to make it 94-87 and came up with his fourth steal of the night at the other end to help seal the victory.
The Raiders shot an even 50 percent for the game, hitting on 12-of-25 from beyond the arc. They also made 18-of-23 from the free throw line and committed just eight turnovers. LC finished the game shooting 56.1 percent overall, making 10-of-19 from three. MSOE force the team into 16 turnovers to offset the shooting touch.
After playing a third game in five days, the Red and White get little rest, hitting the court again Saturday. The Raiders travel to Lisle, Ill., to take on Benedictine at 7 p.m.
