Raiders Outlast Concordia Wisconsin, 78-74

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Austin Stueck and senior Jaren Singh combined for 37 points and 7-for-7 from three-point range to send the MSOE men's basketball team past Concordia Wisconsin 78-74 Thursday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (12-3, 7-3 NACC) have now won nine of their last 10 games and have equaled their best record after 15 games in school history.

Stueck topped 20 points for the sixth time in eight games, scoring a game-high 22 on 8-of-14 shooting. He drained all four 3-point attempts. Singh played in a rare reserve role and sunk three treys to finish with 15 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds in the game. Freshman Collin Seubert also reached double-figures with 10 points.

Senior John Cording also had a solid game, finishing with eight points and six assists.

Brett Boettcher led the Falcons (7-8, 5-6 NACC) with 19 points, hitting on 8-of-9 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Eric Kittel hit all four of his three-point attempts on his way to 14 points, while Mark Scholz added 12 off the bench.

Entering the final minute of regulation, MSOE clung to a 74-71 lead. The teams traded buckets, leading to a CUW timeout with 41.1 seconds to go. Senior John Cording then hit a pair of free throws at 34.6.

Bradley Pinson followed with the first of two free throws. He missed the second, setting off a wild sequence of shots and loose balls that led to CUW possession with 4.4 seconds on the clock and the Raiders leading 78-74. The ensuing possession led to an off-balance three-point attempt and Stueck claiming the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

Both teams shot well from the field, combining on 20 three-pointers in the game. The Raiders finished an even 50 percent from the field, hitting a blistering 10-of-17 on three-point attempts. Concordia Wisconsin shot even better at 53.8 percent for the game, including 10-of-19 on three's.

A big difference in the game came at the free throw line, where MSOE was an efficient 8-of-11, but the visitors hit on just 8-of-19.

The Falcons got their offense on track first, jumping out to a 24-16 lead midway through the first half. The Raiders still trailed by six at 29-23 on a Kittle three-pointer with 4:30 to go before halftime.

Cording followed with a layup to kick-start an 11-0 run. The Red and White scored the final nine points of the first half, capped by a Singh three at the buzzer, and added the first points of the second half.

MSOE pulled ahead by seven at 51-44 before CUW got back into the game with nine-straight points for a 53-51 advantage. Stueck ended the run with a three and, after a Falcon bucket, sophomore Connor Patterson completed an old fashioned three-point play and Cording took a steal the other way for a fast-break layup and a 59-55 lead.

The score remained close before a 9-1 Red and White run made it 74-64. The Falcons then answered with seven-straight points of their own to pull within 74-71, setting up a tense final minute.

The Raiders continue their busy week with their third game in five days at Concordia Chicago Saturday.
