Stueck's Heroics Lead Raiders Past Edgewood

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Austin Stueck forced overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer and the MSOE men's basketball team went 11-of-12 at the free throw line in the extra frame to hand Edgewood a 77-67 defeat Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.

Dylan Rusch found Tal Diekvoss for a three-pointer with just 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Eagles (9-9, 7-6 NACC) a 60-57 lead. Freshman Collin Seubert found Stueck with a long inbounds pass and he hit a 35-foot, off-balance three at the buzzer to give the Raiders (15-4, 10-4 NACC) second life in overtime.

MSOE opened the overtime period on a 13-2 run for a 75-62 lead with just 43 seconds remaining. The team hit all but one free throw and was 3-of-5 from the field in the period.

Stueck finished with a game-high 20 points, while sophomore Connor Patterson had 14 points and senior John Cording 11. Cording added nine rebounds, five assists and two steals on the night.

Brett Meinecke scored 15 points for Edgewood. Rusch finished with 11 and Joe Klocek had 10.

The EC defense hounded the Raiders in the first half, forcing 11 turnovers and building an 11-point advantage at the 3:38 mark of the half. The deficit was still 10 at 2:38 when MSOE started to come back. It scored the final bucket of the first half and opened the second half with seven-straight points to pull within 29-28.

The Raiders would tie the game at 40-40, but could not take the lead. EC led 57-52 with 1:15 to go, before Stueck hit a three-pointer. After back-to-back fouls to stop the clock, the Eagles had a layup miss, with the rebound going to junior Jeremiah Erdmann. He missed a quick layup, but Patterson got the rebound and set up a Stueck jumper to tie the game with 10.7 seconds on the clock.

Rusch took the ball right down the court and found Diekvoss for the go-ahead basket at the top of the key. The horn sounded, but the referees put 0.4 seconds on the clock. The Raiders used a lateral pass to Seubert on the far side of the court. His inbound pass found Stueck just inside halfcourt on the far side. He turned and let fly his shot at the buzzer.

MSOE rebounded from a shaky first half on offense to shoot 51.7 percent in the second, while committing just two more turnovers over the final 25 minutes. The team finished the night 49.1 percent from the field, hitting 7-of-18 three-pointers and 16-of-19 at the free throw line.

Edgewood shot just 36.7 percent in the second half and made just 2-of-7 from the field in overtime to finish the game at 40.6 percent. The visitors hit 11 three-pointers, but got to the charity stripe just four times.

The Raiders return to action Saturday, hitting the road to play at Rockford.
