Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The MSOE women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as it looked to fight back from a 3-0 halftime deficit, but fell short in a 3-2 loss to Dominican Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.
The Raiders (8-7-1, 4-4 NACC) fought back late, pressing for the last 90 seconds, but could not complete the comeback against the Stars (9-7, 5-3 NACC).
Trailing 3-0 at halftime, junior Caitlin Liddiard got MSOE on the board just six minutes into the second half. Sophomore Erika Spanbauer played a ball to the back post where Liddiard was to head the ball into the net. It was her 12th goal of the season.
Just 3:05 later, junior Natalie Gayner made it a 3-2 game with a header of her own. This time, it was sophomore Kait Riley providing the service to Gayner at the back post. She put her header across the goal to the far post.
The Raiders kept up their pressure throughout the half, playing a lot of the period on the offensive. Unfortunately, they could not get the equalizer. Nonetheless, it led to an exciting final two minutes, as Liddiard blasted a shot on target with 90 seconds to go. Her attempt was saved over the crossbar for the first of three consecutive corner kicks.
MSOE was unable to get a dangerous attempt on goal during the flurry, but did have one last shot saved with just 10 seconds remaining.
Dominican took the lead early through a pair of Kelli Iovino goals. Her first score came at 7:06 and she doubled the Stars' advantage in the 21st minute. The eventual game-winner came in the 33rd minute from Leah Tednes.
Shots finished 13-10 in DU's favor, with the Red & White holding an 8-5 shot edge in the second half. Both keepers were called on to make five saves in the match.
The Raiders return to the field Saturday, hosting Lakeland at Viets Field.
