Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with a decisive 92-41 victory over Illinois Tech on the first day of the All-Engineers Classic Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (1-0) advanced to the All-Engineers title game Sunday, where they will take on Ohio Northern at 3:15 p.m. ONU knocked off Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 71-67 in the day's first game. The Scarlett Hawks (0-1) play CMS at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
MSOE got a balanced scoring effort to coast past its opening opponent. Junior Connor Patterson led the way with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds. Junior Austin Stueck tallied 12 points and five assists, while senior Nathan Verdun also reached double-figures with 10.
The Red & White also had four 8-point scorers in sophomores Alex Darville, Dylan Sommerfeld and Collin Seubert, as well as freshman Nolan Henton. Fifteen Raiders saw the floor in the game, with 13 breaking into the scoring column.
Illinois Tech ran its offense through Samuel Rarick, who scored 25 of the team's 41 points.
MSOE opened the game on an 18-4 run and was never really threatened. Its lead reached 20 with just over four minutes to go before the break as a part of a 19-4 run to close the opening period for a 45-17 halftime lead.
The Raiders pulled away late as their rookies and reserves made the most of their opportunity on the floor. Henton, Darville and freshman Greg Pigg combined to shoot 5-for-7 from three-point range after the regular rotation hit just 3-of-12 prior to their arrival on the court.
MSOE shot a sizzling 56.2 percent for the game, finishing with a 42.1 percent clip from beyond the arc and 12-for-14 from the free throw line. The home team held a 40-21 rebounding advantage and committed just eight turnovers into the game, while forcing 20 on the other end.
