Raiders Come up Short Against Ohio Northern

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Junior Austin Stueck scored 25 points, but it was not enough as the MSOE men's basketball team fell to Ohio Northern 70-58 in the championship game of the All-Engineers Classic Sunday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (1-1) have played in the title game in each of the six installments of the biennial tournament, but the fell short of their third championship against the Polar Bears (2-0).

Stueck was MSOE's lone player to score in double-figures, shooting 10-of-21 from the field and hitting four 3-pointers. He was named to the All-Engineers Classic All-Tournament Team and was joined by senior Nathan Verdun.

Konnor Baker led all scorers with 18 points for ONU. He was also named to the all-tournament team, while Isaiah Roux was named tourney MVP after scoring nine points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists. Devon Allen added 13 for the Polar Bears.

Ohio Northern broke an early 12-12 tie with a 12-3 run to jump out to a 24-15 lead. As would be a theme in the game, the Raiders fought back to get close, but could not take the lead. They responded with an 11-3 run to make it 27-26, but ONU again pulled away to take a 34-29 lead into halftime.

MSOE pulled within three early in the second half, but the visitors added to their lead. They went ahead by 10 points with just over five minutes remaining and led by as many as 14 down the stretch.

The Raiders shot a respectable 46.7 percent from the field, but hit on just 5-of-21 from three-point range. They also hampered their own efforts by hitting just 11-of-21 free throw attempts.

The all-tournament team was rounded out by Tyler Gaffaney from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which took third with an 81-58 win over Illinois Tech in the consolation game, and Samuel Rarick from IIT.

MSOE returns to action next Saturday, hosting Benedictine in its NACC opener. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
