Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Megan Kroll scored 14 points to lead the MSOE women's basketball team to a 52-42 victory over Alverno Saturday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (3-1, 2-1 NACC) won possession of the Red Rivalry Cup back from the Inferno (1-6, 0-4 NACC), which had won both meetings last season.
Sophomores Holly Denfeld and Margaret Pugh joined Kroll in double-figures with 11 points each for MSOE. Denfeld also pulled down eight boards.
Julie Gallegos scored a game-high 15 points for Alverno, while Mollie Mikyska had 14.
MSOE never trailed in the opening half, but could not shake the Inferno. It led by as many as six, at 19-13, but the visitors answered with six-straight points to even the game at 19-19. The Raiders would lead by as many as five the rest of the way and took a 28-25 advantage into halftime.
Alverno shot 61.1 percent in the opening half, but was forced into 14 turnovers. MSOE, meanwhile, shot just 37.9 percent, but hit 4-of-6 from three-point range and committed just three turnovers.
The game continued along the same pattern to start the second half, with the Raiders getting out to a seven point lead. The Inferno, this time, clawed back to take the lead and went ahead on a pair of Mikyska free throws to make it 38-37 with 11:54 to play.
MSOE answered with eight-straight points, four each by Kroll and Denfeld, to take back the lead for good at 45-38 with 4:37 to play. The Red & White then saw their lead grow in the final minute at the free throw line, securing the win.
The Raiders limited Alverno to 24 percent shooting in the second half, cooling off the visitors to 39.5 percent shooting for the game. Meanwhile, MSOE finished at a season-low 35.2 percent for the night. The big difference on the scoresheet was the turnovers, where the home team forced 23 on the night and committed just 10.
The Raiders return to the court Tuesday at Edgewood.
