FT. MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Sara McConnell hit a three-run home run and freshman Callie Wightman threw a six-inning shutout to lead the MSOE softball team to a 3-0 victory over Cedar Crest in its second game of the day Thursday in Florida.

The Raiders (2-2) were limited to two hits in the opener against Bluffton (5-2) in a 3-0 loss, but bounced back to down the Falcons (0-6) in a rain-shortened game.

MSOE got all the runs it would need against CCC on one swing of the bat by McConnell. Sophomore Beth Young and freshman Kailey Smith led off the inning with back-to-back walks before McConnell hit a 2-0 pitch to right field for the team's first home run of the season.

That would be all the offense Wightman (1-0) would need, making her first collegiate start she struck out four and allowed just four hits in six innings. She threw the team's first shutout since Jessica Iverson shut down Mt. Mary April 4, 2011, in a 9-0 Raider win.

In game one, the Beavers did all of their scoring in the bottom of the third. With a runner on and two out, BU got a single and a walk to load the bases. Shelby Erford drove in the first run with a bunt single and Johanna Bondra came back with a two-run single to make it 3-0.

McConnell (1-1) got the start in the circle against Bluffton and pitched well outside of that third inning. She had retired nine-straight batters before the first hit of the frame, then settled down to retire the last 10 Beaver batters of the game.

The Raiders get Friday off, but are back on the diamond Saturday with a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene and Northland.
