Box Score 2 WAUKESHA, Wis. – Freshman Shannon Curtis threw a three-hit shutout and senior Julie Windish hit a home run in game one as the MSOE softball team split a doubleheader with Carroll Thursday afternoon at Jean Kilgour Field.
The Raiders (15-13) took game one 2-0, but suffered a 13-4, five-inning defeat at the hands of the Pioneers (8-18) in game two.
Curtis (5-6) started both games, hurling her third shutout of the season and MSOE's ninth in the opener. She struck out six and walked just one in seven innings.
The Red and White bats prevailed in a pitching duel, generating just three hits, but pushing across a pair of runs.
Sophomore Katie Ready led off the game with a single and was plated two batters later on a single by freshman Danielle Walsh. Windish added an insurance run with her team-high third home run of the season with one out in the fourth.
In game two, Curtis was struck for four earned runs in two innings. She allowed four hits and three walks before giving way to freshman Callie Wightman, who also threw a pair of innings. She was responsible for six earned runs in the appearance.
MSOE actually jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Lauren Boyle double in the first run in the opening frame. Then, in the second inning, Curtis and Ready had RBI singles to stake the Raiders to a lead. It was the first collegiate hit and RBI for Curtis.
Carroll responded with five runs in the second, three in the third and four more in the fourth. The Raiders attempted to get back in the game with a single run in the fifth inning, but they could not avoid the fate of a shortened contest.
MSOE is back in action Friday, playing a pair of games at Maranatha Baptist in Watertown.
