Raiders Clinch NACC Tourney Spot With Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE softball team took one of two games against Dominican Saturday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field to clinch a spot in the 2014 NACC Tournament next week at Alverno.

The Raiders (24-16, 11-11 NACC) clinched the bid with a walk-off 2-1 win in game one, was their first-ever against the Stars (23-15, 14-8 NACC), and tied a school record as their 24th win of the season. DU came back to take game two 4-2 in eight innings.

In the opener, the teams traded single runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth to send the game to the seventh inning tied at 1-1. MSOE then loaded the bases with no outs. After back-to-back force plays at the plate, sophomore Katie Ready followed with a single to score freshman Callie Wightman with the winning run.

Freshman Sara McConnell (10-6) got the start in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run in seven innings. She struck out seven.

The Stars claimed the second game in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Kimberley Giannini. The Raiders had also scored first in the second game, plating single runs in each of the first two innings.

Senior Julie Windish came up with an RBI double in the opening frame and the MSOE baserunners generated the second-inning score. Senior Alyssa Breuser scored on a double steal on an error, taking an extra base and making it 2-0.

Dominican tied the score with a pair of runs in the sixth innings on a pair of RBI singles. Sophomore catcher Lauren Boyle did her best to limit the damage with two outs of runners on third, including catching the lead runner on an attempted double steal.

Freshman Shannon Curtis (8-8) threw five shutout innings before allowing the Stars on the board in the sixth. She stuck it out for the decision, battling through six walks and nine hits for eight innings.

MSOE heads into the NACC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and opens play Thursday at 10 a.m. against No. 3 Benedictine.
