Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Caitlin Liddiard scored twice as the MSOE women's soccer team fell short in their bid to upset No. 17-ranked Capital in the first game of the Capital Invitational Tournament Friday afternoon at Bernlohr Stadium.
Liddiard tallied her first marker in the first half to give the Raiders (1-1) a 1-0 halftime advantage, but the Crusaders (3-0) came back with four goals in the second half to secure the win.
MSOE opened the scoring midway through the opening period, as Liddiard notched her third goal of the young season in the 27th minute. She took the ball alongside of the box, shook her defender and launched a shot into the top left corner.
The home side would secure some momentum over the rest of the period, but could not crack the Red & White defense. In the second half, however, Capital equalized the score just five minutes in and took the lead in the 66th minute.
Sophomore Sara Travia equaled Liddiard's team lead with her own third goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 72nd minute. She carried the ball 20 yards and beat the keeper with a low shot into the right corner.
The Crusaders, who were national semifinalists last season, regained control of the game with successive goals within 3:40 of Travia's equalizer. Emily Krause scored for Capital just 1:09 later and Taylor Atkins made it 4-2 in the 76th minute.
MSOE would not go away, as Liddiard pulled her team within one in the 84th minute. This time, she brought the ball inside from the sideline and ripped another shot from the top of the penalty area.
The Raiders did not back down against their ranked opposition and were close to pulling off a win against a ranked team for the third-straight season. They did concede an 18-10 shot advantage, but forced Crusader keeper Kim Leitch into six saves and all but one shot was on frame.
Sophomore Sydney Stephens made eight saves for the Red & White in goal.
The Capital Invitational Tournament continues Saturday, as MSOE takes on Baldwin Wallace at noon central time.
