Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Holly Denfeld scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the MSOE women's basketball team defeated Alverno 63-53 Saturday evening at Reiman Gymnasium.
The Raiders (11-3, 7-2 NACC) completed their season sweep of the Inferno (3-11, 1-8 NACC) and retained the Red Rivalry Cup.
The double-double was Denfeld's second consecutive, eighth of the season and equaled her season-best rebounding total. Sophomore Shaylan Reardon added 15 points and senior Marly Trier finished with 10 points and three steals.
Junior Megan Kroll had a strong game with eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
Molly Mikyska led Alverno with a double-double of her own, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, and Julie Gallegos scored 12.
The game was tight in the early-goings and was tied with 8:49 remaining in the first half before the Raiders caught fire and went on a 26-5 run. They limited the Inferno to just one field goal the rest of the opening half and closed the frame on a 10-3 run to take a 30-23 lead into the break.
MSOE's charge continued in the second half, opening on a 16-2 run to build its lead as high as 21 points at 46-25 at the 13:45 mark.
Alverno responded with a 12-2 run to get back in the game at 48:37, but could not pull closer than 10 down the stretch.
MSOE won the game despite shooting a season-low 29.4 percent from the field. It did get to the free throw line 28 times, converting 20, but the biggest difference was a 21-8 advantage in turnovers. That led to 15 more field goal attempts in the game.
AC shot 35.8 percent in the game, hitting on just 2-of-14 three-point attempts and shooting 68.4 percent (13-for-19) at the free throw line.
The Raiders return to action Wednesday, hosting Benedictine.
