Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Sara Travia had two goals and an assist to lead the MSOE women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Concordia Chicago on a cold and rainy Wednesday night at Viets Field.
The Raiders (12-6, 8-2 NACC) built on a 1-0 halftime lead with four second-half goals against the Cougars (7-11, 4-6 NACC) to close out their best league season in program history at 8-2 and in third place.
Freshman Shelby Namen and junior Erika Spanbauer each added a goal and an assist on the night, while sophomore Carly Mitus also found the back of the net.
Namen got MSOE on the board in the 33rd minute with her second goal of the season, cleaning up a loose ball after a corner kick. Junior Maria Schumacher sent the set piece to the middle of the six-yard box, where Spanbauer had first crack at goal. Her attempt was saved, but Namen was there to put the ball in the net to make it 1-0.
After halftime, the Raiders doubled their lead in the 59th minute when Travia cut inside from the endline and beat the goalkeeper at the near post.
Travia would strike again, cutting a pair of defenders at the top of the box for a 1v1 with the goalie to score in the 73rd minute. She and Namen would set up Mitus' score just 68 seconds later. On that goal, Travia played a ball to Namen near the endline. Namen's cross to the center was left to run and Mitus finished back across the face of goal for the score.
Spanbauer capped the night's scoring with a wonder goal from 30 yards out in the 84th minute. She cut back on the play, turned, and hit a lofting ball that tucked in under the cross bar to make it 5-0.
MSOE held an 18-7 shot advantage on the night, putting 12 shots on goal.
Senior Margot Giesey got the start in goal, playing the first half to earn the win. Sophomore Mary McFee played the second half and was called on to make three saves to preserve the shutout.
