Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Sara Travia headed home a corner kick in the third minute of double overtime to send the MSOE women's soccer team past Edgewood 2-1 in the NACC Tournament Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Viets Field.
The third-seeded Raiders (13-6) trailed the No. 6 Eagles (8-10) after a 15th-minute goal by the visitors, but rallied back to secure the victory and advance to Wednesday's semifinal match at No. 2 Dominican.
MSOE also tied a school record with its 13th win of the season.
Junior Becca Keller finished the match with two assists, setting up both goals off corner kicks. The game-winner came off a driven corner to the middle of the six-yard box. Travia got her head on the ball in traffic and found the back of the net to set off a team celebration on the field.
The Raiders finished with a decisive 25-7 shot advantage in the match, having decidedly more possession going forward. Unfortunately, the staunch Edgewood defense proved tough to crack and Sabelle Seabrook made 14 saves to keep the game interesting.
Hannah Menzia put the visitors ahead early in the opening half, taking advantage of a failed clearance by MSOE and scoring from near the top of the box.
Senior Tori St. Martin was the Red & White's unlikely respondent, equalizing with her first goal in three seasons in the 21st minute. Junior Ally Brehm earned a corner kick with a high shot that Seabrook had to adjust for and punch over the bar for a corner kick. Keller put her set piece in the middle of the six-yard box and St. Martin bodied the ball across the line to level the score at 1-1.
In the 72nd minute, the Raiders threatened for a go-ahead score as senior Aly Loepfe saw her attempt on goal ricochet off the post and Travia's follow-up was snuffed out by Seabrook.
Sophomore Mary McFee made three saves in the match to preserve the victory, including one in the second overtime period.
MSOE's 13 wins tie the 2011 team for most wins in school history.
