Raiders Drop Season Opener to Beloit

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Senior Austin Stueck scored 26 points and the MSOE men's basketball team led for much of regulation, but it was not enough as Beloit stormed back for a 77-74 overtime victory Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (0-1) led by as many as 12 in the second half, but the Buccaneers (0-1) pulled even down the stretch and led by as many as six points in overtime.

Stueck had game-high scoring honors on 10-of-23 shooting on a day when he moved into sixth place on MSOE's all-time scoring list. Senior Connor Patterson was the only other Raider in double-digits, scoring 11 points to go with nine rebounds before fouling out with one second remaining in regulation.

Rudy Bentley Jr. had 16 points and eight assists for Beloit. He was one of three players to finish with 16 points for the visitors, joined by Steve McAfee Jr. and Andrew Bremner.

In overtime, the Bucs scored the first five points and led by six points at 71-65 with 2:20 remaining. The Raiders pulled within two after a pair of free throws, a steal on the ensuing inbounds pass by senior Garrison Glowniak and two Glowniak free throws with 1:10 to play.

The deficit was once again two points on a Stueck three-pointer with nine seconds on the clock. But, after a 1-for-2 trip to the BC free throw line, sophomore Greg Pigg's three-pointer at the buzzer fell just short.

MSOE had built a 46-34 lead early in the second half, but it would not hold as Beloit responded with a 13-2 run to pull within one at 48-47. The teams traded runs back and forth, with the Buccaneers tying the score at 54-54 and pulling ahead for the first time at 60-59 at the 3:42 mark after a 6-0 run.

After traded buckets, Stueck hit a game-tying free throw with 1:33 to go in regulation to tie the game at 62-62. Neither team scored the rest of the way, with Beloit missing the front end of a 1&1 with just one second on the clock, allowing for overtime.

The Raiders struggled shooting all day, finishing 35.1 percent from the field and just 4-of-25 on three-pointers. They did get to the free throw line 31 times, but converted just 18 for a 58.1 percent clip.

MSOE will return to action next weekend in Norfolk, Va., at the Marlin Tip-Off Classic. The Raiders open the tournament with the hosts, No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan Friday at 4 p.m. central time.
