Raiders Come Up Short at LFC in OT

Box Score

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Junior Holly Denfeld posted her second double-double of the season, but it was not enough as the MSOE women's basketball team fell to Lake Forest 73-68 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Lake Forest College Sports & Recreation Center.

The Raiders (0-4) led by one inside the final minute of overtime, but the Foresters (1-1) were able to pull away as three Red & White starters fouled out in the final 55 seconds.

Denfeld, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds Tuesday, finished the game with 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals before fouling out after having played all 44-plus minutes to that point.

MSOE put two more players in double-figures, as senior Marly Trier and freshman Jamie Spanbauer scored 10 points apiece with two more players checking in at eight points each.

Four starters reached double-figures for LFC, led by Michelle Rocolcol's 18 points. Brittany Avonts had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

With the teams tied at 59-59 after regulation, the Raiders scored first in the extra period and led 66-63 with 2:06 remaining after Denfeld and Trier hit back-to-back layups. The Foresters responded with two buckets of their own, but Trier put MSOE up 68-67 with a pair of free throws at the 0:55 mark.

On the next possession, Trier fouled out and LFC tied the score with a free throw. The Raiders then missed a shot on their next possession before the home team pulled ahead when Denfeld fouled out with 16 seconds to go. It then iced the game from the line in the closing seconds.

Lake Forest went 8-for-10 from the free throw line in overtime and finished 19-for-31 at the charity stripe in the game. LFC shot 38.1 percent from the field and hit on 6-of-18 from three point range.

Getting to the free throw line proved to be the difference, as the Raiders shot 39.4 percent from the field in the game, but reached the line just 17 times with 12 made (.706). They conceded a slight rebounding edge, 45-42, and both teams committed 17 turnovers.

MSOE returns to the court next Saturday, playing at Alverno.
