Box Score CHICAGO – The MSOE women's basketball team scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back in coasting to its sixth-straight win with an 82-21 rout of Illinois Tech Wednesday evening at Keating Sports Center.
The Raiders (6-4) led 46-19 heading into the final quarter before outscoring the Scarlet Hawks (0-10) 36-2 to provide for the final score.
Senior Megan Kroll and junior Holly Denfeld had a game-high 14 points each, while freshman Brooke Scott finished with 11. Kiana Jeremiah added nine.
Norma Flesvig and Hailey Borowczyk led IIT with six points each.
MSOE held the home team scoreless for the first 6:19 of the game in opening the contest on a 14-0 run. It then embarked on a 16-0 run in the second quarter to open a 36-13 lead at halftime. During that stretch, Illinois Tech was without a field goal for 12 minutes stretching into the third quarter.
In the final frame, the Raiders scored the first 24 points and finished with a 36 points in the quarter. It's their most points in a quarter this season, the NCAA's first with quarters instead of halves.
IIT's 21 points are the fewest allowed by the Red & White in a game since allowing a school-record low 18 points to WCTC Jan. 4, 1991. It's the fewest points allowed to a four-year school in program history, topping the 26 allowed to Northland International Dec. 4, 1999.
The Raiders shot 53.2 percent in the game, but their defense was the story. They finished with a school-record 27 steals as they forced the Scarlet Hawks into 41 turnovers. MSOE converted those turnovers into 52 points. Senior Marly Trier finished with a game-high five steals, while Kroll and Scott had four apiece. Three other players had three steals each.
The Scarlet Hawks shot just 20.7 percent on the night.
The Raiders will look to extend their winning streak in the new year when they host Concordia Chicago Saturday.
