Box Score MILWAUKEE – Freshman Jamie Spanbauer scored 18 points in her first collegiate start and three other players scored in double-figures for the MSOE women's basketball team as it rolled to its first win of the season 77-54 over Alverno Saturday evening at Reiman Gymnasium.
The Raiders (1-4, 1-1 NACC) outscored the Inferno (3-4, 1-3 NACC) 21-10 in the second quarter to pull away and led by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter.
Junior Holly Denfeld scored 16 points to go with seven rebounds, while senior Megan Kroll posted a strong all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Junior Lizzy Hilby added 12 points and junior Margaret Pugh finished with nine.
Mollie Mikyska led Alverno with 11 points and Gabby Hood tallied nine.
After winning the first quarter 14-13, the Raiders pulled away by outscoring the Inferno 21-10 in the second quarter to carry a 35-23 lead into halftime. They continued to pull away in the second half, converting a 52-38 lead into a 67-40 advantage with a 15-2 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth. MSOE's lead peaked at 77-49 with 3:32 to play on a Hilby three-pointer.
The Red & White set early season-highs with 49.2 percent shooting from the field and 77 points. The team also turned the ball over just 15 times for the second-straight game. Alverno was limited to just 31.4 percent shooting in the game, as it hit on just 3-of-13 from three-point range.
With the win, the Raiders retained the Red Rivalry Cup, which goes to the winner of the regular season series between the teams. MSOE swept the Inferno last season.
The Raiders return to the court Tuesday, hosting Edgewood.
