Box Score MILWAUKEE - Junior Holly Denfeld finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the MSOE women's basketball team to a 62-49 victory over Edgewood Tuesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (2-3, 2-1 NACC) won their second-straight game by rebounding from a tough first quarter to outscore the Eagles (2-5, 1-4 NACC) in each of the final three periods.
Denfeld scored MSOE's first 10 points of the game and finished 11-for-14 from the field on the night. She was the team's lone double-digit scorer, as junior Margaret Pugh scored nine points to go with three blocked shots and freshman Kiana Jeremiah buried three 3-points for nine points.
Edgewood put three players in double-figures, led by Rachel Pope's 17 points. Sierra Jiran added 12 points and Zoey Dougherty finished with 10.
Leading 23-21 at halftime, the Raiders started the second half strong to pull away in the game. With the score 29-26, Denfeld started a 10-0 run and contributed five points in the stretch. Jeremiah hit a three and junior Lizzy Hilby drained a pull-up jumper to make it 39-26 with 2:01 remaining in the quarter.
Edgewood would not go away, closing the third frame on a 7-2 run and pushing that run to 13-4 to pull within 43-39. The home team pulled away again to lead 49-41, but EC hit back-to-back baskets to make it 49-46 with 3:26 to play on a Pope three.
Less than two minutes later, the Raiders' lead was back up to 10 at 56-46 and Edgewood was forced into a timeout with 1:31 on the clock. After the break,, Denfeld and senior Megan Kroll hit back-to-back baskets and Pugh converted three free throws to push the lead back to 10. MSOE would then continue to pull away down the stretch.
After a cold start to the night, the Raiders got into a rhythm offensively and shot 41.0 percent on the night. They also turned the ball over just nine times. Defensively, MSOE finished with seven blocked shots in the game as senior Marly Trier joined Pugh with three blocks.
Edgewood shot 35.3 percent in the game and turned the ball over 18 times.
The Eagles had led 13-8 after the first quarter, as both offenses struggled to get going and shot under 30 percent for the period. The Raiders came alive in the second quarter to outscore the visitors 15-8 and carry a 23-21 lead into halftime.
The Raiders return to action Saturday, hosting Dominican at 4:15 p.m.
