Hernandez Heads Three NWA Champions

MEQUON, Wis. – Freshman Luis Hernandez won a meet title at heavy weight and was named the Northern Wrestling Association Freshman of the Year to lead the MSOE wrestling team to a second-place finish at the NWA Championship Saturday at Concordia Wisconsin.

The host Falcons took first at the meet 107.5 points and the Raiders were second with 64. Lakeland took third with 47.5 points and Knox rounded out the field with 27 points.

Hernandez beat Lakeland's Andrew Wagner and John Hinson of CUW, both by fall, to claim the title in the heavyweight bracket. His first fall came in 2:12 and he downed Hinson in 3:37 in the title match. He pushed his season figures to 25 wins and 20 falls, just two off the school record.

Freshmen Devin Mahnke and Colin Kenyon also won their weight classes. Mahnke scored an 8-2 decision over Jeremy Kroger of Lakeland for his 20th win of the season to make the first-place bout. There, he edged Jake Reuteler of Concordia for the title, 3-2.

There were just two entries at 125 pounds, putting Kenyon in the title bout to start the day. He got past Max Riederer from CUW by a 9-3 decision to take first. There was also just two entries at 133 pounds, allowing senior Nick Miceli to take second despite an injury.

Senior Just Wolfenden added MSOE's other runner-up finish, defeating Jackson Faulkner from Knox by fall in 2:25 to advance to the first-place match. There, he fell in a high-scoring decision, 16-11.

Sophomore Garrett Gross also won a match, taking third at 174 pounds with a 9-4 decision over Concordia's Thomas Schmidt in the third-place match.

The Raiders have two weeks off before heading to the NCAA West Regional Championships Feb. 28.
