Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Holly Denfeld had 31 points and the MSOE women's basketball team scored the first 18 points of the second half in breezing by Edgewood 72-48 in the NACC Quarterfinals Saturday evening at the Kern Center.
The third-seeded Raiders (20-6) won their second NACC tournament game and reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in school history by beating the No. 6 Eagles (12-14) for the third time this season.
MSOE now heads to Lisle, Ill., Wednesday to play at No. 2 Benedictine after the Eagles were 12-point winners in their quarterfinal matchup.
Denfeld had a dominant performance, shooting 14-of-19 from the field. She also pulled down 13 rebounds and had three blocks and three steals. Junior Megan Kroll also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She dished out four assists and finished with five steals.
Jazmin Little scored a team-high 16 points off the bench for Edgewood. Mariah Hill added 14.
The Raider defense was the story, limiting the Eagles to just 27.8 percent shooting in the game, including 21.4 percent in the second half. EC was also forced into 22 turnovers, 17 of which came on Red & White steals.
MSOE could not shake the visitors in the opening half, opening an early 11-point lead only to have Edgewood pull within a couple of possession. The first half ended with the Raiders holding a 31-25 advantage.
The Red & White was finally able to get some distance by opening the second half strong. It scored the first 18 points of the period and held the Eagles scoreless for the first 6:14 after the break. That built the lead higher than 20 for the first time. EC would get no closer than 18 the rest of the game.
MSOE shot 46.2 percent for the game and did have to overcome 21 turnovers, but got to the free throw line 29 times and converted 24 of its attempts. The Raiders also cleaned up on the glass behind Denfeld and Kroll, forging a 45-32 rebounding advantage.
