Raider Offense On Fire in Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE softball team scored 20 runs on 30 hits against Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday, earning a doubleheader split at the MSOE Athletic Field in the NACC openers for both teams.

The Raiders (6-8, 1-1 NACC) scored 11 unanswered runs in an 11-3 victory in six innings in game one, before seeing the Warriors (5-7, 1-1 NACC) overcome an 8-1 deficit for a 13-9 win in game two.

In game one, the second through sixth hitters each reached base at least twice and had two RBIs, with junior Katie Ready driving in three runs. Freshman Gabbi Garcia reached base four times with three hits and a walk, scoring three times, from the lead-off position.

It was WLC that jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the first inning and making it 3-0 in the fourth.

MSOE then erupted for five runs in its half of the fourth inning, leading off the frame with back-to-back doubles by junior Beth Young and Ready. Sophomore Kailey Smith and freshmen Laryn Brinkman and Caitlyn Moran later followed with three-straight RBI base hits to put the Red & White in the lead.

The Raiders then added six runs in the sixth inning with just one out to end the game prematurely with a run rule. Moran had a bases loaded walk and was followed by a two-run double by Young to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Shannon Curtis (3-5) threw a complete game, striking out six, in the circle for the win. She scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run in the game.

The offense carried over into game two, as MSOE broke open a 1-1 game in the third inning with five runs. Ready and Moran had RBI doubles, while Brinkman, Curtis and freshman Alex Cook each had RBI singles to make it 6-1.

Junior Lauren Boyle and Moran each drove in runs to make it 8-1 after four innings.

WLC got back in the game, pulling within 8-6 with five runs in the fifth inning. After the Red & White pulled another run ahead at 9-6, the Warriors struck for seven runs in the sixth to seal the game.

The visitors walked 15 times in the second game, capitalizing on six free passes and a pair of run-scoring wild pitches over their two big innings.

Ready added three more hits in game two, while Boyle, Young, Brinkman and Cook each added two more hits.

Sophomore Callie Wightman started the game in the circle, lasting three innings with four hits, two runs allowed and six walks. Curtis threw the final four innings and suffered the loss.

The Raiders return to action Sunday at Concordia Wisconsin.
