Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Shannon Curtis did not yield an earned run over 11 innings to lead the MSOE softball team to a split on the first day of the 2015 season Tuesday in Florida.
The Raiders (1-1) fell to Bluffton (5-1) in the first game, 10-0, before bouncing back for a 3-0 shutout of Clark (1-7).
Curtis (1-1) scattered five hits and struck out five in shutting out the Cougars for MSOE's first win of the season. Meanwhile, eight different starters collected hits in the game, led by two apiece from junior Katie Ready and sophomores Kailey Smith and Callie Wightman.
Curtis worked around a couple jams, including in the first inning when the first three Clark hitters singled. She induced a pair of ground balls sandwiched around a strikeout to escape the situation unscathed. Then, in the sixth, the Cougars loaded the bases with one out and she struck out the next two hitters swinging to preserve the 1-0 lead.
After five scoreless innings, junior Beth Young broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI triple to right centerfield. The Raiders then added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of three Cougar errors.
In the first game, Curtis allowed just three hits and a walk, but a first-inning error led to an unearned run and she left the game after four innings trailing 1-0.
The Beavers then put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth inning and brought it to a premature end with four more runs in the sixth.
The Raider bats were stymied, mustering just two base runners with one hit and a walk.
MSOE returns to the field Wednesday, playing Wartburg followed by Newbury.
