Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Shannon Curtis threw a complete game in game two, striking out five and allowing just two runs, but it was not enough as the MSOE softball team was swept by Benedictine in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (10-18, 3-11 NACC) conceded four unearned runs in a 6-0 game-one loss, then fell to the Eagles (21-7, 12-2 NACC) 2-0 in game two despite Curtis' efforts.
Curtis (6-11) allowed just three hits and struck out five in the complete game effort.
BenU only gave the Raiders trouble in the second inning, as a hit batter and walk put two runners on with no outs. Curtis came back to retire the next two hitters before a walk and two-run single provided all of the game's scoring.
From that point on, Curtis struck out the next hitter and did not allow an Eagle to reach safely until a one-out single in the seventh, including three-straight 1-2-3 innings down the stretch.
While she kept the game close, MSOE struggled to get on the board, though it did threaten late. Junior Katie Ready had a two-out triple in the sixth, but was left stranded. Then, in the seventh, junior Lauren Boyle hit a two-out double to the wall with a runner on first base. Unfortunately, junior Beth Young was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The Raiders finished with three hits in the game against Melissa Guzior, who went the distance and struck out three for the shutout.
The second inning was also the Red & White's undoing in game one. Starting pitcher Holly Haberkorn opened the scoring with a one-out home run. Two Raider errors then allowed four unearned runs to score and make it a 5-0 game.
Sophomore Callie Wightman (3-6) then ran into trouble in the fourth inning when the first three hitters reached to load the bases with no outs. Freshman Caitlyn Moran then came into the game and escaped the inning with just one runner scoring. She allowed just two hits in pitching the final four innings with just 28 pitches in the appearance.
At the plate, the Raiders put multiple runners on in the second and third innings, but did so with two outs each time and could not follow through with the key hit.
MSOE takes a break from conference play for its next outing, hosting Mount Mary Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
